Gas measurement challenges across agriculture, industry and the environment
Wren Sensing is developing an optical platform for methane, carbon dioxide and ethylene sensing. Our on-farm livestock field trials sit alongside target and exploratory applications, each labelled with its stage below.
Livestock measurement
Methane and carbon dioxide · Livestock field trials
Field testing takes our sensor onto a working farm, where it measures methane and carbon dioxide with cattle and sheep in real conditions. Its methane readings are compared with an existing methane sensor. Carbon dioxide has so far been checked against an existing sensor in the laboratory, with a field comparison to follow.
Concentration measurements can inform emissions assessments as well as enable development of low methane feeds and breeding of low methane livestock.
Controlled atmosphere fruit storage
Ethylene · Target application
We are developing an ethylene sensor targeting measurements in the tens of parts per billion (ppb) for controlled atmosphere storage. Extremely low concentrations of ethylene must be distinguished from the other volatile organic compounds in a storage atmosphere to monitor fruit.

Industrial and environmental monitoring
Methane and carbon dioxide · Development opportunities
Gas plants, wastewater facilities and other industrial sites need dependable methane and carbon dioxide monitoring. We are looking for partners to develop sensing for these settings and for wider environmental monitoring such as area monitoring.
Horticultural research
Ethylene · Exploratory applications
Ethylene monitoring in orchards is exploratory. We invite research proposals that set out the biological question, useful concentration range, sampling conditions and the facilities or field access available.
Bring a measurement question
Tell us the gases, the environment and the decision the measurement needs to support. We start with an initial discussion, review technical fit and evidence, then agree a project scope where there is a fit.
Have another application in mind? A short outline without confidential details is enough.
